Our client requires the contribution of a Scientific Expert and the requirement will operate as follows:

• i. Request for an expert statement is irregular and would depend on casework.
  • However, it is estimated that a Scientific Expert will spend less than 10 hours per month;
• ii. The Scientific Expert accepts the requirement to respond to communications from the Home Office and other pertinent authorities by telephone or email in a timely manner ensuring development and casework is not compromised.

The role of the Scientific Expert is described in: 2020 No. 759 (L. 19) SENIOR COURTS OF ENGLAND AND WALES, MAGISTRATES’ COURTS, ENGLAND AND WALES; The Criminal Procedure Rules 2020 Part 19. [5]

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Deciding whether a substance is “capable of producing a psychoactive effect in a person who consumes it”;
• Attendance at case conferences and/or Court, in person or on the telephone, as required.

SKILLS & QUAIFICATIONS

Evidence of the following experience is required:

• i. Professional qualifications in clinical or in-vivo pharmacology or medicinal chemistry;
• ii. Five years’ minimum postgraduate experience in the appropriate field.
• iii. Current expertise and detailed knowledge in one or more of the following, or related fields:
  • (a) psychopharmacology;
  • (b) pharmacology and drug discovery research; and/or
  • (c) clinical/non-clinical pharmacology; and
• iv. Current and detailed knowledge of, and practical experience in, in-vitro testing together with in-vivo pharmacology in the drugs arena;
• v. Skills in data interpretation from in-vitro pharmacology assays, both functional and binding;
• vi. Ability to conduct basic and descriptive statistics tests and interpretation of in-vitro data and appreciation of the predictive value of such data.
• vii. Home Office will provide information about the Psychoactive Substances Act, the specification for the in-vitro testing and the format of the data.

Following experience is desirable:

• Desirable for the applicant to have access to contemporary literature to support the results of in-house testing.

About the Role

Our client is seeking a SC cleared Assistant Safety Engineer based at MOD Abbeywood in Bristol, with the flexibility of hybrid working, requiring 3 to 4 days onsite per week. This is a long-term contract until 31 March 2027, with an immediate start available. The role offers up to £440 per day (inside IR35) and involves working within a highly regulated environment, managing safety requirements for equipment within the Naval domain.

What You Will Do

• Develop and manage technical safety requirements and documentation for various sub-systems, ensuring compliance with safety standards and legislation.
• Support Safety Management Systems and contribute to hazard analysis, risk evaluation, and mitigation activities to support safe, operational systems.
• Provide expert safety advice during design, testing, verification, and validation processes.
• Manage safety-related contractual activities and oversee safety performance within projects.
• Assist in the safe decommissioning and disposal of equipment, ensuring environmental and safety standards are maintained.
• Contribute to ongoing safety policy and process development to meet Defence standards and best practices.

Who You Are

• Hold a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics qualification at RQF Level 4 or higher (for example HNC or above).
• Experienced in providing technical advice and delivering safety systems in complex environments, ideally within Defence or Military sectors.
• Registered with a relevant professional body, such as EngTech or RSciTech, or possess a minimum RQF Level 6 (e.g. Honours Degree) in a related discipline.
• Familiar with safety legislation, regulation, standards, and safety management in highly regulated industries.
• Previous experience with the naval domain is highly desirable.

• Hands-on experience in cryptographic solution architecture, especially within highly regulated or security-sensitive environments.
• Strong stakeholder communication skills and the ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear business recommendations.
• Existing SC clearance is essential.

Desirable qualifications:

• Knowledge of Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC) planning and migration.
• Familiarity with cryptographic standards from NCSC, NIST, ETSI, ISO, or IEC.
• Skills in scripting and automation (PowerShell, Python, Bash).
• Experience with Identity & Access Management (IAM), cloud security, or critical national infrastructure environments.
