Security Clearance

If you're considering contract or permanent work within the Defence, Aerospace, Security, or Government sectors, chances are you'll come across the term Security Clearance. In the UK, many roles involving sensitive data or national security require vetted personnel — and that's where security clearance comes in.

At Evodia, we regularly work with security-cleared professionals and guide candidates through the process. Here’s what you need to know.

What is Security Clearance?

Security clearance is a series of checks carried out by UK Government departments to ensure individuals working in sensitive roles are trustworthy, reliable, and do not pose a security risk.

The level of clearance required depends on the nature of the role and the information you’ll have access to. These checks are primarily carried out by the UK Security Vetting (UKSV), a part of the Cabinet Office.

Types of Security Clearance

  1. Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS)

    • Entry-level screening
    • Required for most government and defence roles as a minimum
    • Includes identity verification, criminal record check, right to work, and employment history
  2. Security Check (SC)

    • Common for roles involving access to secret government data
    • Involves background checks into employment, financial history, overseas travel, and potential vulnerabilities
  3. Developed Vetting (DV)

    • The highest level of clearance
    • Required for roles with access to top secret information
    • Involves a detailed investigation, including interviews with the individual and their associates
  4. Counter Terrorist Check (CTC)

    • Required for individuals in positions with access to sensitive public sites or materials
    • Includes criminal record, credit, and security service checks

How Do I Get Security Cleared?

You can’t apply for clearance yourself — you must be sponsored by an employer or government department, typically once you’ve been offered a role that requires it. The process can take several weeks or months depending on the level of clearance and your personal circumstances.

At Evodia, many of the roles we advertise are open to both cleared and clearable candidates, and our team can advise you on the likelihood of sponsorship for your desired role.

Already Security Cleared?

If you currently hold active clearance (BPSS, SC, DV, or CTC), we can help match you with suitable roles across the defence and security space. Let us know your clearance level when registering, and we’ll do the rest.
