Our client, a leading defence organisation based in Bristol, is seeking a highly skilled Ships Engineering Manager to join their team on a contract basis, with the flexibility of hybrid working, requiring three days onsite each week.
Due to the tight timescales involved, successful candidates are required to already hold a valid SC security clearance.

About the Role
Joining a programme supporting Fleet Solid Support Ships for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary, you will take the helm of technical management to ensure the successful development and delivery of complex engineering solutions. Leading on multi-system integration, your expertise will help meet the strategic needs of the UK defence capability while managing technical risks and documentation in a highly regulated environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Generate and manage detailed technical requirements and deliverables for multiple ship systems, balancing operational support and lifecycle costs.
- Authorise and oversee engineering data inputs and changes, ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation, standards, policies, and safety considerations.
- Provide guidance on quality, security, sustainability, and interoperability of systems, supporting the delivery of integrated and safe solutions.
- Identify, evaluate, and mitigate technical hazards, ensuring risks are well-managed and documented.
- Lead design efforts within realistic project constraints—time, budget, and performance—working collaboratively across teams.
- Manage system testing, validation, verification, and ongoing support modifications to operational systems.
- Support technical assurance activities across multiple disciplines to meet high standards of safety and quality.
Experience & Qualifications
- Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics qualification at RQF Level 4 or higher.
- Extensive, broad experience in providing technical advice and delivering successful engineering outcomes within the Ships domain.
- Background in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, or Naval Architecture highly desirable.
- Professional registration with a recognised body, such as:
- Incorporated Engineer (IEng),
- Chartered Engineer (CEng),
- Registered Marine Scientist (RMarSci),
- Chartered Marine Engineer (CMarEng),
- Incorporated Marine Engineer (IMarEng), or similar.
