Senior Safety Engineer - SC cleared

Are you an experienced Safety Engineer looking to make a real impact on UK defence programmes? We’re working with a leading client to find SC cleared Senior Safety Engineers to support high-profile defence initiatives across multiple domains, including Maritime, Air, Land, and Weapons systems. This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to some of the country’s most complex and critical defence projects.

About the Role

Based on a hybrid working model with travel to key DE&S sites such as Abbey Wood and other UK defence establishments, this role offers a chance to work within a dynamic programme that enhances military capability. You’ll be working on safety assurance, hazard-log management, safety case development, and risk assessment across a variety of projects supporting national security.

The initial contract duration is typically 3 to 5 months, with the possibility of extension depending on programme requirements. The day rate is up to £600 per day (inside IR35).

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Developing, implementing, and maintaining Safety Management Systems (SMS) in line with defence standards.
  • Conducting hazard identification, analysis, and risk assessments, maintaining hazard logs, and supporting risk reduction measures.
  • Developing and reviewing safety assurance plans and safety cases, ensuring compliance with safety standards and legislative requirements.
  • Providing safety engineering advice and support throughout the system lifecycle, including safety reviews and audits.
  • Supporting stakeholder engagement, including regulators, project teams, and industry partners, ensuring safety requirements are fulfilled.
  • Championing continuous improvement initiatives in safety processes, tools, and methodologies.

What We're Looking For

  • Proven experience in safety engineering or safety management within defence or safety-critical environments.
  • Hands-on background in hazard analysis, safety risk assessments, and safety case development.
  • Experience working within complex engineering environments and supporting safety assurance activities.
  • Familiarity with defence safety standards, ASEMS, and lifecycle safety management principles.
  • Degree, HND, HNC or equivalent qualification in Engineering, Safety, Science or related disciplines.
  • Practitioner-level competence in System Safety practices.
  • Current SC security clearance, used within the last six months, is essential.
