SUMMARY
This role sits within a dedicated Skill Group alongside other engineers working within the technical discipline of Safety Engineering.
As a Safety Engineer, you will be responsible for supporting in the delivery of Acquisition Safety policy and solutions. It involves through life management of project safety risk management delivery in support of safe and suitable equipment, systems, and services to Front Line Commands.
Specialisms associated with this Skill Group/Success Profile are: System Safety Policy and Governance; System Safety Management; and System Safety Assurance and Audit.
DE&S operates as a matrix managed organisation. Within this you are part an Engineering Skills Group that compliments your technical background listed above, working alongside other Skill Groups of different technical backgrounds, in different phases of the acquisition lifecycle and/or differing support enabling entities. From your Skill Group, your People Coach will provide you with
exciting work, meeting internal priorities, aligned to the Themes being operated within DE&S. Broadening your skills and experience across DE&S, you may work within:
- Gateway - which brings work into DE&S, plans projects coherently and efficiently, and monitors/supports evolving future innovation.
- System Integration - which supports delivery teams, by providing collaborative insights, integrate equipment capabilities, manage/mitigate/reduce corporate risk, and be a single point of contact for external regulator.
- Corporate - underpins DE&S by, guiding the organisation, managing expertise, and providing services from regulation, communication to digital infrastructure.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Requirements – Support the generation of technical safety requirements and documentation for subsystems, including the considerations to in-service support and associated costs.
- Technical Data – Identify, collate, and evaluate technical safety data to support the management and
- maturity of project documentation, focusing on successful technical outcomes.
- Legislation/Policy – Working in a highly regulated area, differentiate and comply with relevant safety legislation, regulation, policy, processes, and standards to deliver technical documentation for a subsystem. This includes the essential relation to quality, safety, security, and sustainability, of the subsystem, and the interoperability with other sub-systems.
- Risk – Contributes to technical risk management activities at project / programme level.
- Design – Support the generation, update and review of all safety artifacts and safety cases related to an equipment type.
- Stakeholder Management – Collaborate with other sub-system teams and specialists, over technical safety requirements.
- V&V – Support in the system’s safety: test, verification, validation, and evaluation process.
- Support – Assist in the safety decisions in through-life support and modification to an operational subsystem.
- Assurance – Support technical assurance activities within the limit of your technical discipline.
- Disposal – Support disposals and decommissioning of basic equipment.
- Technical Discipline – Draft recommendations in relation to your technical area of knowledge.
EXPERIENCE
ESSENTIAL
- Have some experience of providing technical advice and delivery of successful engineering outcomes;
- Experience of:
- System Safety Policy and Governance;
- System Safety Management;
- System Safety Assurance and Audit
- As a minimum hold either:
- A Science, Technology, Engineering and/or Mathematics based qualification at RQF Level 3; or
- Professional registration as either:
- o Engineering Technician (EngTech) or
- o Registered Science Technician (RSciTech).
