Due to the tight timescales involved, successful candidates are required to already hold a valid SC security clearance.
About the Role
As the Lead OME Safety Engineer, you will leverage your extensive safety engineering expertise to support acquisition projects, ensuring compliance with industry standards and MOD regulations. Your deep understanding of Systems Engineering approaches, particularly in the context of Ordnance, Munitions, and Explosives (OME), will be instrumental in guiding technical safety requirements and documentation for diverse systems. You’ll coordinate safety engineers, oversee safety assurance activities, and act as the primary adviser for acquisition safety across the portfolio. The role involves managing safety risk throughout the lifecycle of the equipment—from initial certification to decommissioning—while ensuring adherence to statutory and regulatory responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the generation of technical safety requirements and safety documentation, including Safety Cases, Hazard Logs, and Safety Management Plans, aligned with safety and environmental priorities.
- Coordinate technical safety inputs and authorise changes to support safety maturity and compliance across multiple projects.
- Ensure rigorous reviews, audits, and inspections to maintain compliance with UK legislation, MOD regulations, and directives.
- Develop risk management methods that embed safety into design processes, fostering a culture of continuous safety improvement.
- Provide acquisition safety advice, guiding safety assessments, approvals, and decisions for complex equipment and systems.
- Lead safety assurance activities, including testing, verification, validation, and evaluations relevant to maritime platforms and explosives handling.
- Manage safety considerations during disposal and decommissioning to ensure safety and environmental compliance.
- Contribute to the development and continual improvement of safety policies and processes, aligning with corporate standards.
What we're looking for
- Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics qualification at RQF Level 4 or equivalent.
- Proven experience providing technical safety advice at a senior level, with a strong background in multidisciplinary engineering projects.
- Extensive safety engineering knowledge, with an appreciation of Systems Engineering approaches.
- Chartered status with a relevant professional body (CEng or CSci), demonstrating recognised expertise in safety or engineering.
- Desirable: A background in Ordnance, Munitions, and Explosives (OME) with experience in managing safety in highly regulated environments.
Additional Details
This position offers a competitive day rate ranging from £550 to £770 (ex VAT) on an Inside IR35 basis. The initial contract runs until 31 March 2026, with potential to extend.
