Lead OME Engineer - SC cleared

Are you an experienced OME Engineer with a passion for naval and maritime systems? Our client, a leading defence organisation, is seeking a SC cleared Lead OME Engineer to support crucial programmes within the Ships Acquisition domain. This is an exciting opportunity to bring your technical expertise to complex maritime weapons and munitions projects, providing essential leadership in safety, certification, and systems integration.

This role is based in Bristol, offering a flexible hybrid working arrangement—requiring 2 to 3 days onsite per week. The position is initially contract-based until March 2027, with the possibility of extension, and involves a day rate of up to £805 (inside IR35). You’ll be joining a collaborative team where your knowledge of ordnance, munitions, explosives (OME), and platforms will directly influence delivery success and operational safety.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide expert technical advice on OME systems, weapons, and pyrotechnic devices across the acquisition lifecycle
  • Lead requirements definition, system integration, and technical assurance activities
  • Support OME integration into maritime platforms and contribute to Platform Authority certification submissions
  • Authorise technical data, ensuring compliance with standards and regulations such as DSA02 and Def Stan 05-57
  • Manage technical risks and develop risk management strategies that prioritise safety and environmental considerations
  • Participate in design reviews, technical audits, and assurance activities with MOD and industry stakeholders
  • Lead verification, validation, testing, and acceptance activities for OME systems
  • Support certification, modifications, disposal, and decommissioning processes
  • Coach and mentor engineers within your team and across the wider programme

What We’re Looking For

  • Substantial experience providing technical leadership within complex defence programmes
  • Strong background in OME, weapons, munitions, or maritime systems engineering
  • Proven track record delivering certification and safety assurance outcomes
  • Knowledge of systems engineering principles, verification, validation, and certification activities
  • Experience managing technical requirements and leading safety management initiatives
  • Familiarity with defence standards and safety guides, including DSA02 and Def Stan
  • Prior experience managing or leading OME or Safety Integration teams
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills
  • Chartered status is essential—preferably CEng, CSci, CMarTech, CChem, CPhys, or CPhys
