Our defence sector client, based near Salisbury in Wiltshire are seeking an experienced Ecologist to lead a comprehensive habitat condition assessment across a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Your expertise will directly inform future land management priorities, ensuring the protection and enhancement of this valuable ecological site. This is a 3 month contract offering up to £525 per day (Inside IR35).

Clearance Requirements: BPSS, SC clearance is preferred.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conduct detailed habitat condition assessments across the SSSI, focusing on lowland calcareous grassland.
- Apply Condition Status Monitoring (CSM) techniques accurately and consistently.
- Manage medium to large-scale ecological projects with a focus on conservation outcomes.
- Deliver conservation and ecology programmes, effectively engaging and managing volunteer teams.
- Advise on and support habitat management techniques and best practice implementation.
- Ensure compliance with legislation relating to SSSI, Special Protection Area (SPA), and Special Area of Conservation (SAC).
- Support land management operations with an understanding of their ecological impact.
EXPERIENCE
ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE & SKILLS
- Proven experience managing medium to large-scale ecological projects.
- Strong botanical identification skills, particularly with calcareous grassland species.
- Experience applying CSM to lowland grassland habitats.
- Demonstrated success delivering conservation programmes involving volunteers.
- Sound knowledge of relevant legislation for SSSI, SPA, and SAC designations.
- Practical understanding of land management operations and their ecological impacts.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Degree in Ecology or related field.
- Membership of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) preferred.
